Radon

Genesis 2:7 “ the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”

When we hear of someone having lung cancer, we usually attribute the case to smoking.  I recently read some information published by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that surprised me.  There is a dangerous element in our homes that is linked with lung cancer.  In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today.

What is radon?  The EPA report states “Radon is a radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Your home traps radon inside, where it can build up. Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements.” EPA further states that 1 in 15 homes in the United States have elevated levels of radon.

How to find out is your home has elevated radon levels:   EPA recommends testing to find out the levels of radon in your home. The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) has been able to develop and implement an extensive indoor radon program serving the residents of Ohio. Low cost Radon test kits are now available to Ohio residents: www.ohio.radon.com

God is good all the time.  We often hear about the evils of the internet, and we can certainly use a good thing for not so good purposes.  Used in the right way it is a blessing. Via the internet we can find out about things like radon and ways to protect ourselves from its dangerous consequences.

Blessings,
Deaconess Sharon
