Many say their favorite season is summer: lots of sun and more time for family and leisure. This brings me to the point of our health focus minute. Time in the sun can also develop heath risks. The most common health risk is sunburn. Sunburns can cause initial reactions that are none too pleasant. In addition to the red and painful epidermis familiar to sun bathers, sunburn can also lead to skin blistering, chills, and fever. The UVB radiation from the sun is most dangerous between 10am and 4pm even on cloudy days. Put on a protective sunscreen. When picking a sunscreen product, it is imperative that the sun protection factor (SPF) be 15 or higher. Sunscreen should be reapplied after heavy exercise or sweating. Read the instructions on the sunscreen tube or bottle carefully. If you do get sunburned, get out of the sun! You can combat the symptoms of minor sunburns by splashing cold water on the irritated skin, taking an over-the-counter pain reliever and applying aloe or another cooling agent. DO NOT APPLY BUTTER OR OIL TO THE AREA. You should also drink plenty of fluids. Blisters covering an area larger than one entire arm or abdomen need immediate medical attention. Go directly to the nearest emergency room for treatment. There is a hymn entitled “Heavenly Sonlight”. It is of course talking about Jesus – The Light of the World. We can bask in his light without any fear. |
